Our Vision

The Newly constructed Umubano Primary School

Girubuntu Primary School

We believe in holistic education.  Reading, writing and active investigation into the world around us opens a gateway to knowledge and information and provides the tools for individuals to take an active role in their own development.

At APIE, we want to do much more than just fix a few leaking roofs.  We aim to create a stimulating learning environment that will encourage children to stretch their imaginations and realise their full potential.  We want to build a safe place for both boys and girls to play that caters for their holistic well-being and addresses their own diverse needs and backgrounds.

Through exposure to an international language at an early age, we hope to broaden the children’s horizons to offer them access to a wide range of opportunities.  Also, with plans for adult evening classes, we want to promote and improve education across the whole community, in particular among men and women who missed their schooling during the genocide.

Top Nursery ClassWhile physical infrastructure is a great need in Rwanda, we work to provide much more for our partner schools.  Working with the local management team, we provide a complete review of the school’s funding and finances, management and recruitment, and even the educational structure.  We want to help our schools perfect a model for primary education that can sustain itself long after our initial involvement.

This sustainability is key and an area to which APIE is fiercely committed.  As we believe that quality education is the right of every child, we work with the school to develop a financial model that will secure both the financial stability to pay teachers fair and competetive wages, continue improving the school's material resources, and still provide free education to approximately 1/3 of students who would not otherwise have access to an equivilant education.

HOW DOES YOUR SUPPORT FIT INTO THIS VISION?

Donor support is essential in setting up the essential framework for our schools.  While we work towards self-sustainability, this process can take several years as the school develops its organizational strategies and improves its educational standards to the level of a competetive tuition-earning private school.  In the mean time, infrastructure, recruitment, educational resources, and many other expenses must be addressed in order to get the project moving.  Your support goes directly to these costs.

To control exactly how your contribution is used, please see our "support" page to donote to a particular cause.
